Let him play with the compass. Many guys like tools. Some people like to be the map reader ("Honey, I have these directions from the website. Does this look like the spot they mean?"). This isn't to downplay your own ability or to appear helpless, but to get another pair of eyes on a clue can only help.

"What you need, Charlie Brown, is involvement."

Okay, so you may have already tried that. There's also the cheap (free!) and easy exercise angle. Lots of folks, like myself, are bored to tears by running (but have to do it anyway - Thanks Uncle Sam!), but letterboxing gets in the greatest form of exercise known to human physiology: walking.

If you have children, you can always play the Kid Card. "It's something we can do as a family.". "It gets the children out of the house.". "They get to see lots of interesting and historic spots.".

Just a Thought,
Dave

What I should have elaborated on was that we will have a camper in
tow. Most likely I will venture out by myself during the week of
vacation. I am trying (poking, prodding, whatever it takes) to get
him to participate in this hobby of mine but without much success.
But thanks for the suggestion....

I tried that one and all it got me was a new set of walkie talkies. I have
to admit my husband is pretty good about going with me when no one else is
going. But he's also quick to point out that we're going in a group so I
don't need him to go :)

Although he's been known to leave work at lunch time to come check a compass
bearing for me.. I guess that qualifies him as a good hubby.

My suggestion is leave him home and take a friend that enjoys your hobby......

I'll try that one! It is true. I like the hobby but there are some
boxes that I won't go to alone. Around closer to my home I know my
bearings. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Don't worry - it's like cooking. Men make the greatest chefs, y'know.

Oh, wait - did I send that to the list or privately?

My husband initially joined me because he wasn't keen on me hiking in the woods alone. I think he is actually better at finding boxes than I am now. He is not probably as fierce about letterboxing as I am, but I wouldn't call him a reluctant husband, for which I am grateful!

My word! What a universal applicability to all of our situations.

This issue is something we have discussed in our family. We may all
eat together but we need not share the same loaf, if you follow that
non-Scriptural reference. It is wrong to expect your mate to enjoy
everything you do.

Men are simpler creatures although given to be the head of the house.
They have at least three onorous responsibilities: 1) to make
decisions, 2) to lift heavy objects, and 3) to frighten the children.
To expect more, when they are already tired from those three and
working all day in the Walmart or wherever, is just wrong.

Ladies, do not drive your husbands away by insisting on something
like this. Instead, let him think it is his idea - we all know how to
do that. Then tell him that you would love to have him take his gun
along (as long as it is not TOO noticeable) and that you would feel
eversomuch safer from rattlesnakes, coyotes, and muggers. Make
certain he can hear his football game on a small pocket radio and
headphones. Offer to carry his beer (men do seem SO dependent upon
that) in your letterboxing bag.

Myself, I would rather save arguments and stronger persuasion for
important things: like that "tennis bracelet" I have been hinting for.

Hope this saves your marriage,
Darlene
